On most beaches you find bungalows but far more on the northern half of the island. In the very northern end of the island the only town, Baan Saladan, is located and here you find most of the shopping on the island. The shopping is limited to the more classic tourist shopping however more shops open every year making the shopping better and better. In Saladan you also find a lot of restaurants and also a market. Many of the restaurants are built on poles just above the water overlooking the channel and the shoreline of Koh Lanta Noi. The island does not have any big mall yet but plenty of minimarts.
Koh Lanta is part of the National Park covering the Krabi province and here you will not find any jet-skis or other water activities aside from the classic long-tail-boats. The weather seasons here are very much like on Phuket.
Best season to visit Koh Lanta if you want sunny weather is between December and April. These months are considered as dry season and the temperature are normally just above 30 degrees. In Mars and April the temperature rises and can go up to about 40 degrees and with high humidity this is very hot.
The ocean temperature is also about 30 degrees all year round but with some variations depending on season and winds.
The months that are most likely to have heavy rainfall are May and October to November. In the summer month the weather can be very good but also very bad. Many people tend to think that rain season equals rain everyday and all day long. That’s most certainly not the real case even though there can be periods of nonstop rain there are often periods with very good weather as well. Lanta becomes very quiet in summer time and most places close. However life goes on for most people who live here all year round so there will not be any problem finding food even though you might not find all the tourist restaurants.
As on most places in Thailand it is very easy getting around. At Koh Lanta you will find song-taews, tuk-tuks and motorbike taxi to take you anywhere you want.
Remember to always have the price set for your transport before you take off, this is only to prevent you from getting a price you did not expect.
Another option is to rent a motorbike to explore the island on your own. The traffic in Thailand is often very intensive and dangerous. Koh Lanta might be considered to be more safely because off less traffic however accidents are common so drive carefully. On the south you will find dirt-roads and you will also drive on hills where the rainwater damaged the roads and at places the sand on the roads are very soft making it hard to drive for an unexperienced driver.
