    2. Gavin Smith s debut novel Veteran is a take on near future military science fiction, where the world has been at war with Them for decades Our hero , Jakob Douglas, is the veteran of the title, an ex soldier who spends his days trying to find oblivion through drink and drugs One day he is told that a Them infiltrator has crashed to earth and must be retrieved He is reactivated into service but events do not proceed as planned He finds himself on the run with a teenage prostitute, realising that [...]

    3. Most of this book was pretty awful The writing was sub par The formatting was atrocious word does not signify that someone is speaking word does Get it right No, seriously, this book as pretty well filled with garbage The author included characters without introducing them, they would enter and leave scenes without the reader being aware and then treated as if they should know they were already there One of the main character Morag randomly switches names with no fanfare and no explanation and t [...]

    6. First of all, I am relieved to discover there is a sequel to Veteran More so because the ending was, to my mind, disappointing, rather than through any excitement to read on Do not get me wrong I did enjoy Veteran, and there were sections of it where I found myself unable to put it down, but overall it let itself down in a couple of areas.Parts of it were repetitive, and repetitive in an annoyingly small way as such that being repetitive could have been avoided altogether if certain repetitive w [...]

    7. British, post cyberpunk military driven sf Interstellar war, lots of blokes with implants, firefights, a bleak future and a properly disillusioned hero who may or may not be Wolverine Some clich but fun to be had

    8. Three centuries from now, the human race has survived a nuclear war and expanded into space, colonising several nearby star systems During their colonising efforts, humanity has come into contact with Them , a powerful and apparently ruthless alien race War has raged ever since between the two races, a sixty year cycle of blood and deadlock.Jakob Douglas is a former British special forces operative dishonourably discharged from the service for organising a mutiny, but still held on the reserve l [...]

    9. A Gollancz Debut again You d think they were paying me well, they are, I guess, in books and occasional free drinks Plus the consistency of their output is such that they re one of the few imprints with real name recognition amongst customers, and I like a lot of their stuff as well, so what the hell My next book is a Gollancz one as wellAnyway, Veteran Proper, hard SF There s no doubt about that Elements of lots of previous hard SF books fight for supremacy here The nameless, insectile, Them wh [...]

    10. Veteran is the debut novel from Gavin Smith and a book that I heard of earlier in the year, one that quickly made its way on to my list of books that I must read in 2010 What I liked about the blurb was that is had a no nonsense, straight to the point feel and was laced with hints of what lies within It s told in the first person and takes no prisoners with its story and characters, but does both aspects very well indeed Veteran is a novel that could very easily be up in the top few sci fi debut [...]

    11. Interesting, unique battle and shooting descriptions, especially for fps fans, but too long for what it gives, I felt sometimes a little bored while reading it.

    12. Jackob Douglas is a retired special forces operative living a fairly squalid existence in Dundee He s seen action against alien forces in faraway places and believes his fighting days are over When an alien craft crash lands nearby, his superiors reactivate him and he goes to investigate, setting in motion a chain of events that take him across the Atlantic, to the bottom of the ocean, and then to a distant solar system in a bid to uncover the truth behind the aliens and the sinister, Earth base [...]

    13. Good stuff A pleasant surprise Will definitely be looking into of Mr Smith s books. Now to get the next book in the series

    14. I had never heard of Gavin Smith when I randomly picked this book from the shelves in Sci fi Bokhandeln The Sci fi Bookstore in Gothenburg Now I m really glad I ve discovered this fantastic author In grim apocalyptic cyberpunk future mankind is embroiled in a never ending war with a truly unknowable alien race We get to follow former British special forces operative Jakob Douglas as he gets reinstated to track an alien infiltrator that recently crashed to earth. From here everything escalates qui [...]

    15. This could have been a five if the book didn t come apart entirely in certain spots As an action sci fi, this is one of the most violent, visceral books I ve come across in the genre, and it excels at that The setting is fantastic, the characters as action archetypes are great, the locations are some of the better imagined ones I ve come acrossBut man, in a few parts the wheels fall off entirely There is a section where the characters debate the ramifications of their plan that stretches on for [...]

    16. I rather liked this book and it s gritty feel It s post apocolyptic setting and the struggle against a vicious alien race made for a good story The book in places did lose me, I just couldn t handle the idea of pilots flying around in their ships and fliers controlled only by the musical instruments they were playing Other elements of it I did enjoy, like the idea of a mass town of vehicles and caravans that just moved around the wastelands of North America About two thirds of the way through th [...]

    17. I wish I could give 3.5 rather than 3 I thought the concept was really good, just the writing let it down for me in some parts, for example some things just happened abruptly without any build up or tension to heighten the impact Also the characters seemed to easily acquire just the right bit of kit they needed for each operation I was also not sure why there needed to be a difference between the wraith suits worn at one point and then the later, different suits worn at the end which pretty much [...]

    18. The blurb says best debut since Altered Carbon I think Best Richard Morgan book since Woken furies would be apt If you enjoyed Morgan s Kovacs books you will be hard pressed not to like this Dystopian future with lots of macho hard asses The main difference here is that the lead is not an unstoppable killing machine and tends to get trashed by pretty much everyone Another addition are the aliens, which thankfully are very alien and avoids the common mistake of humanising them The book does tend [...]

    19. I enjoyed most of this book I liked the main characters, thought they were an interesting array of differing personalities The brutal, devastated world was futuristic but too easy to believe in Much of the philosophy of the book was based on evil rich people taking advantage of poor people, but in some pretty Machiavellian ways I wasn t too sure what happened at the end if it was a setup for a sequel or if it was meant to leave something to our imaginations Some loose ends would have been better [...]

    20. c2010 FWFTB Them, implacable, alien, enemy, hacker Dan Abnett is quoted as saying Veteran may be a debut, but it reads like the work of a veteran and I couldn t agree Great plot, well drawn characters and an evocative world The humour is also a great addition and makes it an easier read despite the quite dark plot I am busy looking for the next one so have no hesitation in recommending to the normal crew One of the Commancheros had been a medic on Lalande I think I needed to get my own medic to [...]

    21. Fast paced, first person science fiction The narrator, a traumatised former soldier, is a charismatic guide to a grim and frequently violent future Vividly imagined packed with plausibly invented technology the book combines breathless, page turning action sequences and dark, sardonic humour Entertaining throughout, Veteran also raises thought provoking questions about war and the consequences of violence An impressive debut novel.

    22. Science fiction that had a viewpoint and action Really what can fill an afternoon better than glimpses of the way things can be and how we can be right and wrong at the same time about the same things Very violent and it frames the action in a intelligent story with exciting writing First book in a while to bring back that feeling I had the first time I read Altered Carbon by Richard K Morgan And from me that is high praise.

    23. Full throttle military SF I ve been a fan of the genre for a while and really enjoyed the usual scenes of future weapons and the warriors who wield and have become them through extensive cybernetic and bioaugmentation I found the flawed characters fascinating as well as the dystopian world they live in On the other hand, the resolution to the story is unsatisfying.I m hoping there will be future installments of this story.
