The Morning of the World By Dennis Jung ABOUT THIS BOOK It was 1990, and I was browsing in the gift shop of the Honolulu Academy of Arts At the time, I was halfway through the writing of my first novel Like all first novels, it was a chaotic mess marginally inspired, and riddled with the usual gaffes novice writers seem to commit with impunity A mystery in search of a plausible plot is almost too kind a desABOUT THIS BOOK It was 1990, and I was browsing in the gift shop of the Honolulu Academy of Arts At the time, I was halfway through the writing of my first novel Like all first novels, it was a chaotic mess marginally inspired, and riddled with the usual gaffes novice writers seem to commit with impunity A mystery in search of a plausible plot is almost too kind a description To make a long story short, while perusing the assortment of art books I happened on a particularly attractive volume whose subject was rituals and ceremonies of the Pacific Rim I randomly opened it to a page midway through and there it was my long lost antagonist The much needed counterbalance to my shopworn hero The astonishing image I encountered on that page was that of a leyak, or at least a ceremonial depiction of the mythical vampire witch of Bali I wasn t entirely ignorant of this creature, or the cultural belief system from which it sprang Several years before, I had visited Bali and became infatuated with its mystical landscape and people Intrigued, I did my best to weave this villain into my novel Suffice to say my first attempt was an abject failure But that character, that concept of a being that psychically feeds off the human spirit lingered in my imagination Several subsequent attempts to incorporate it into a viable story also ended in failure I toiled for several years a hundred pages there, two chapters here, and in a burst of misdirected productivity even hammered out the better part of a four hundred page police procedural only to realize how monumentally unsatisfying I found the final result Nothing seemed to work It wasn t until I returned to Bali in 1998 that theHindu concept of duality and a unique outlook on the role of good and evil struck a personal and spiritual chord That insight allowed my to wed that particular paradigm with a story line that satisfied my various interests and needs my background and interest in anthropology, a nod to a certain philosophical viewpoint, and a desire to create a rich, character driven suspense story Still, it didn t come easy It never does, at least for me Steven King I am not After false starts than I care to contemplate, an idea a story line finally gelled The result is THE MORNING OF THE WORLD At first take, the reader may see my novel as just another vampire story or an Anne Rice knockoff I implore the reader to not give up on my story so easily, but to allow oneself to be immersed in a world both exotic and real, and regrettably all too likely to be lost due to the globalization and homogenization of the human experience The belief system represented here is real and no less valid than our own I personally find some of Balinese Hinduism s basic tenets to have a certain timely appeal and clarity of vision, especially in the current climate of world conflict I wanted this novel to reflect some of that viewpoint That said, my purpose was to write a suspense novel, but the romantic in me dictated it also be a story of connection, a love story The evolution of this tale reflects to some extent the cycles of my life seasons of despair rooted in personal and political crisis, periods of writer s block, as well as fits of creative energy I am sure a close read of my work will undoubtedly reveal an unevenness reflective of that struggle So be it, for I happen to believe the act ofwriting is by its very nature an uneven and imperfect attempt to explain oneself and ones surroundings and experiences For me, writing isn t a career but a creative outlet, and for both myself and my audience, a window into my subconscious Any creative process, be it painting, song writing or the fabrication of an imagined set of characters and situations involves impulses and insights whose origins may be unrealized by the author at the time they are conceived Subliminal messages and
